From Dull to Dreamy: A Bright Cottage Kitchen Transformation
This once dull, dated kitchen underwent a stunning resurrection into a bright yellow cottage kitchen remodel that has quickly become one of our favorite transformations. From the moment we started, our goal was clear: create a vibrant, functional, and fun space where the homeowner could proudly display kitchenware, tackle serious cooking projects, and enjoy the art of baking.
Design Highlights:
- A painted ceiling in Benjamin Moore Sea Life, a unique purpley-blue shade that adds unexpected depth.
- A statement-making Bertazzoni gas range and convection oven, both a splurge and a centerpiece for the space.
- Bright yellow floating shelves in Benjamin Moore Bright Yellow, echoing the bold and cheerful energy of the kitchen.
- A stunning glass mosaic backsplash with subtle hints of blue, perfectly paired with custom Roman shades made from a graphic floral fabric.
This old home, neglected for years, had its charm revived with a focus on preserving its character while making it functional and fun. The appliances had been stripped out, leaving behind a space that was a blank slate begging for love and creativity.
Key Objectives of This Kitchen Remodel:
- Develop a layout that maximizes the small space, with dedicated work zones.
- Stay within a tight budget while allocating funds to impactful elements.
- Retain architectural charm while introducing vibrant and modern touches.
- Create a functional baking station in this small footprint.
- Balance closed storage with fun, open-display opportunities.
- Brighten the overall palette and replace the flooring for a fresh, inviting feel.
Design Challenges We Overcame:
- Dark, outdated walls and flooring.
- An awkwardly low ceiling compared to the rest of the home.
- A super small footprint and inefficient adjacent butler’s pantry.
- Wainscoting and plaster damage that required creative material solutions.
- Limited space for appliances, requiring tough choices and clever compromises.
Design Solutions That Made the Magic Happen:
- Discovered a surprise opportunity to raise the ceiling, painted in Benjamin Moore Sea Life for added character.
- Created a custom cabinetry layout with smart storage, including long-term storage above the fridge.
- Decided to forgo a dishwasher in favor of a trash pullout and more sink space, allowing for future upgrades if needed.
- Utilized a countertop microwave on a bar cart to save counter space.
- Added large-format white tiles (12×35) from floor to ceiling behind the sink for a clean, user-friendly surface.
- Incorporated intricate mosaic tiles on the floor for texture and vintage charm.
- Designed a “command central” area with a bulletin board in a void created by the adjacent fireplace.
This transformation is a testament to thoughtful design that balances practicality with personality. If you’re looking for a kitchen with bold colors, vintage details, and smart solutions, let us show you how we can bring your vision to life.
