This unique bathroom in a modern beach home is a study in contrasts.
The initial footprint was laid out by the architect, but it did not function well and was a hodge-podge of cabinetry and clunky, built in linen closets. We redesigned the footprint to present a better flow, as well as allow a more modern mix of materials to be utilized. The mix of traditional carerra marble on the floor against the sleek walnut cabinetry, bold lava rock shower, and vanity wall create a sense of bold style.
The walk in thermostatic shower system was custom designed for a man who wanted the full car wash effect!
Often in bath design, designers do not address the showers and tubs, and leave the selection of valves and shower heads to the plumbing supply house. I think this is a mistake and that designing a custom shower is as important as placement of tubs and fixtures! We laid out each valve, body spray and other pieces, to be at exact placement for the ease of the owner.
The vanity is constructed of traditional walnut but the drawers are modern slabs and the vanity appears to be hung off the wall.
This was the plan, but, since this home is a piling home on the beach (meaning pilings are running to the third floor), we had unusual site conditions to contend with… after the builder began! Because of the location of the pilings in the adjacent bedroom, we had to run the plumbing outside the wall. So, a very deep, recessed toe kick is hidden under the vanity so that it appears floating but really is not. This ended up being a good thing to help support the vanity span from wall to wall. To access the plumbing fittings, the panel in the lower section is removable.
